As Lent will soon be upon us, it’s a good time to think now about what will take us through the season when we are surrounded by war, death and despair. In ‘Bread,’ Janet writes:

‘Perhaps he saw beyond the horror
Of that evening and the long-drawn day
That was to come…
And knew how he would take the bread again,
Oval and soft, with untold millennia
Of healing yet to come, of consolations
Enough for all the hungry and the wronged,
The grieving and the weary. He would take the bread
And break it for their brokenness,
And they would know him.’

Perhaps in The Wilderness, this Lent, there might be bread for us all.
